Leptin and Ghrelin: Why You Can Feel Hungry No Matter How Much You EatLeptin and ghrelin are your body's appetite control system. Leptin naturally peaks during deep sleep, and that nighttime rise is part of what keeps appetite in check while you sleep so even one night of poor sleep can lower leptin, raise ghrelin, and intensify cravings the next day. The Perimenopause ConnectionDeclining estrogen increases inflammation and can worsen leptin resistance, which makes the brain more protective of stored energy and increases the tendency to accumulate abdominal fat.
